Motion:

2.  New course proposal: FILM 430 – Special Topics in Film Studies

            Discussion:

The Interim Registrar cautions against the practice of introducing new course prefixes (for example: FILM, MATH/BIO) because of the future complexities they can introduce (degree audits, etc.).  The committee was confused by the phrase “Third Year Chinese” found in the title of the sample FILM 430 syllabus provided – “Third Year Chinese: Contemporary Chinese Society and Culture through Chinese Films.”  The committee recommends the phrase be deleted.

Motion:

To approve the proposal

Motion passed unanimously.  9-0-0

MATH

New course proposal: MATH/BIO 250 – Introduction to Biostatistics

Discussion: Continued discussion regarding the creation of new course prefixes (MATH/BIO) and cross-listing of courses.  The Interim Registrar recommends the course be assigned either a MATH prefix or a BIO prefix.

Motion:

To approve the proposal pending two changes: 1) Course prefix to be MATH instead of MATH/BIO, and 2) Course number to be 250 (it was incorrectly designated as 205 in materials submitted).

Motion passed unanimously.  9-0-0

            1.  New course proposal: EDU 388 – Teaching Ethnology and History of Dance

2.  New course proposal: EDU 416 – Capstone: Applications in Dance Methodology and Best Practices

Discussion among the committee on several questions.

            Motion:

To return the proposal to the proposers for clarification regarding the following:

  • The proposal shows EDU 416 to be being taught in the fall semester, but capstone courses are typically taught in the spring semester.
  • The proposal rationale statements for EDU 388 and 416 refer to replacement of courses (EDU 360, 361, and 365) that have been banked.
  • The single credentialed faculty member identified to teach EDU 388 and 416 is an adjunct faculty member.  The FSCC requests verification from the dean and/or registrar that a course can be added to the catalog without a full-time faculty member to teach it.
  • Provide evidence of approval of the proposal by the dance faculty.

Motion passed unanimously.  9-0-0

            7. New course proposal: SEC 430 – Special Topics

            8. New course proposal: SEC 469 – Internship

Note:  This proposal was originally considered at the FSCC meeting of 2/16/11.  At that meeting a citation to the course was found on page 264 of the 2010-2011 catalog and the committee, believing the course existed in the catalog, chose not to act on the proposal.  The committee subsequently discovered there is not a course description for the course in the catalog and brought the proposal back for consideration.

10. Change in course number proposal: SEC 430 – Firewalling and Defense to become SEC 405 – Firewalling and Defense
